문장부호 (Punctuation marks)

1. full stop, period 마침표(.)

-서술형 문장을 끝 맺을 때

-타이틀 뒤에 Dr.Smith / Sr. / Jr.

-축약형을 쓸 때 Sep. 6 / No. 1 / ex. / etc. (et cetera) / gov. / approx. (approximately)

2. comma 쉼표(,)

-문장과 문장을 연결할 때

I went to buy some eggs, but I got cheese instead.

Summer is right around the corner, and I am so excited about it.

-여러가지 항목을 나열할 때

I love pizza, kimchi, chicken, and fruits.

-날짜와 주소를 표시할 때

3. hypen 하이픈(-)

-복합어를 만들기 위해 단어를 결합하는데 필요한 문장부호 (띄어쓰기로 대체불가)

-연속 모음이 따로 발음되는 걸 나타낼 때

co-operate / pre-enlightment

-숫자 중 정수 21에서 99까지

twenty-two / thirty-six/ sixty-eight

-분수를 표기할 때

1/3 = one-third

1/2 = one-half

-쓰는 건 똑같지만 뜻이 다른 말

recover(회복하다) re-cover(다시 덮다)

4. exclamation mark 느낌표(!) -비즈니스 이메일에서 안쓰는게 좋음

-감정이나 느낌이 들어있는 감탄사

-명령문

5. semicolon (;)

-두 개의 문장이 관계성이 있을 때

Class has been canceled today; professor Lee was sick.

-단어 혹은 구절들이 이미 쉼표를 쓰고 있는 경우 쉼표대신 사용

Relatives at my birthday party included my sister, Annie; my brother, Tom; my cousin, Sean; and my grandma, Mary.

6. Colon (:)

-목록을 나열하는 경우

You have two choices: pay your rent or get out.

Sam will need the following ingredients: milk, potatoes, onions, and cheese.

-앞 문장에 대한 요약이나 부연 설명을 덧붙일 때

Love is blind: we don't see the blemishes, the shortcomings.

-다른 사람이 한말이나 어떤 대화 내용을 가져와서 제시할 때

7.apostrophe (')

-글자나 소리가 빠진 줄임말을 표기할 때

-단어를 축소, 줄일 때

can't / won't / wouldn't

-"~의 것"처럼 소유격을 나타낼 때

인용부호 (Quotation marks)

1. double quotes ("")

-직접 대화를 표시할 때 쓰거나 말을 인용할 때

She said, "I would really like to have a boyfriend."

2. single quotes ('')

-큰따옴표로 인용한 인용문 안에서 또 다른 말, 제목, 이름 등을 인용할 때
